That $3.50/kg quote for a 316L investment casting? It's bait.
Here's what happens next. You place the order. Two weeks later the factory emails you saying the quoted grade is unavailable—they suggest substituting 304, "or equivalent." You push back. Ten days later they say the parts are done, but the photos show orange-peel surfaces and a repair weld you never approved. You hire a local inspector. He finds porosity on 22% of the samples. The factory asks for another 40% deposit before reshooting the batch.
This pattern repeats across China's silica sol investment casting market. It's not that good foundries don't exist—they do, and many are excellent. But the gap between marketing and manufacturing is wide, and export buyers can't drive over to check the shell line in person.

Step 1: Verify the Company, Not the Email
Any trader can generate a beautiful PDF with your company's logo on it. Step 1 happens before quotes, before drawings, before anything else.
- Pull the legal entity name from the business license and search it in China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (国家企业信用信息公示系统, or "qixin.com" for a user-friendly version). Check that the registration status says 存续 (active).
- Compare the email domain to the company's registered domain. A Gmail address from a "1,200-person foundry" is an immediate red flag.
- Look up the registered address on Baidu Maps or Google Maps Street View. A foundry in a residential tower doesn't cast steel.
- Call the landline number listed in official registration—not the number printed on the brochure. Ask for the general manager's office. See who answers.
This isn't about being paranoid. It's about confirming you're negotiating with the entity you think you're negotiating with. If the company turns out to be a trading company, that's fine—you just need to know whether you're buying from the foundry or from a middleman.
Step 2: Confirm It's Actually Silica Sol
"Investment casting" and "silica sol investment casting" are not the same product. In China, water glass (sodium silicate) is still widely used as a shell binder because it costs 30-40% less. The problem: you get rougher surfaces, looser tolerances, and more shell cracking on complex parts.
Ask the supplier directly: "Which binder system do you use—silica sol or water glass?" If they say "both," ask which one applies to your quote. If they hesitate, that's your answer.
Silica sol shells produce surface finishes around Ra 3.2-6.3 µm. Water glass shells land at Ra 12.5 or worse. You can also ask for shell photos. A silica sol shell has a smooth, pearl-white appearance. A water glass shell looks grittier, often gray-brown. And here's the kicker: some unlisted suppliers quote silica sol prices but run water glass shells when your back is turned. That's why Step 6 (third-party FAI) exists.
Step 3: Scrutinize the Metallurgical Paper Trail
Good foundries can produce material documentation on demand. Every. Single. Time. If the supplier sends you a one-page "certificate of conformance" instead of an actual material certificate, keep digging.
What you need:
- EN 10204 3.1 material certificate with heat number, spectro analysis, and chemical composition.
- ASTM A732 certificate for standard alloy castings (CA15, CF8M, etc.).
- Heat treatment records plus tensile test results (yield, UTS, elongation) for the specific heat.
Now verify the numbers against the alloy spec. For 316L (CF8M is the casting equivalent), you expect Cr 16-18%, Ni 10-14%, Mo 2-3%. If the certificate shows Cr 15.1% or Mo at 1.4%, walk away or demand an explanation.
And ask to see the spectrometer output. A real foundry lab has a direct-reading spectrometer (直读光谱仪). If they can't show you a live demo or recent spectro logs, their "certificates" are probably Excel files.
Step 4: Test Tolerance Claims Against Reality
Most Chinese foundries work to ISO 8062 CT6-CT7 linear tolerances for steel investment castings. In practice, that means roughly ±0.05 mm on critical small features and ±0.5% of nominal dimension on larger features.
If a supplier claims CT5 on a 400 mm part without discussing draft, machining stock, or reference points—walk away. That tolerance would require a whole different manufacturing process, or it means they don't understand the drawing.
Ask for a tolerance study from a similar past job. A serious foundry will have Cpk data for the features they hold. A brochure won't.
You should also clarify the difference between "as-cast tolerance" and "post-machining tolerance." Some suppliers quote finishing allowance and then say "we hand it to a machining shop next door." That's fine, but you need to know who owns the tolerance if parts fail.
Step 5: Demand a Line-Item Cost Breakdown
Bait pricing depends on opacity. When the quote comes back at $3.50/kg for a 316L casting, ask the supplier to split the price into components:
- Alloy material cost—check current LME nickel price; 316L melt stock alone is roughly $3.2-3.8/kg depending on market conditions.
