How to Evaluate a Foundry Supplier in China (2026 Checklist)
Stop guessing. Use this 10-point framework to verify a Chinese foundry's quality, capacity, and reliability—before you sign anything.
Why Supplier Evaluation Matters
A bad foundry partner can cost you far more than the price of parts: delayed shipments, quality failures, communication breakdowns, and damaged reputation with your customers. The right evaluation process prevents these problems before they start.
Point 1: Quality Certifications (Real or Fake?)
Don't just accept certificates at face value. Verify them:
- ISO 9001: Check via CNCA (cx.cnca.gov.cn) or certification body's website
- IATF 16949: Essential for automotive; verify through IATF database
- ISO 14001: Environmental management; increasingly important for export
- Ask for audit reports, not just certificates
Point 2: Production Capacity Match
Can they actually handle your volume?
- Monthly capacity (tonnage) vs. your requirements
- Current utilization rate (over 85% = potential delays)
- Peak season handling (Chinese New Year, summer)
- Backup capacity for rush orders
Point 3: Quality Control Infrastructure
Walk the floor. Look for:
- CMM machines (how many? what size?)
- Spectrometer for chemical analysis
- Tensile/hardness testing equipment
- X-ray or ultrasonic for NDT
- Dedicated QC team (separate from production)
Point 4: Process Capability
Do they have the right processes for your parts?
| Process | Best For | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Sand casting | Large parts, low volume | Furnace capacity, molding lines |
| Investment casting | Small, complex parts | Wax injection, shell building |
| Die casting | High volume aluminum/zinc | Die life, machine tonnage |
| CNC machining | Post-casting finishing | Machine count, precision |
Point 5: Pricing Transparency
Beware of quotes that seem too good to be true:
- Request cost breakdown: material, labor, overhead, profit
- Compare material cost to market rates
- Ask about tooling costs separately
- Understand payment terms and currency risks
Point 6: Communication Quality
Test before you commit:
- Response time to technical questions
- English capability of engineering team
- Willingness to provide detailed answers
- Communication channels (email, WeChat, video call)
Point 7: Track Record & References
Ask for references—and actually contact them:
- Customers in your industry/region
- Long-term relationships (3+ years)
- Similar part complexity and volume
- How they handled problems
Point 8: Financial Stability
A foundry going bankrupt mid-order is a disaster:
- Check business license (gsxt.gov.cn)
- Ask for financial statements (for large orders)
- Look for signs of cash flow problems (late payments to suppliers)
Point 9: Sample Quality
Never skip the sample phase:
- Order a sample before production commitment
- Test to your full specifications
- Visit during sample production if possible
- Compare to golden sample throughout production
Point 10: Contract & IP Protection
Get it in writing:
- NNN agreement (non-disclosure, non-use, non-circumvention)
- Quality specifications and tolerances
- Delivery terms and penalties
- Warranty and dispute resolution
