Automotive Casting from China: A Buyer's Checklist Before Placing Orders
Automotive is the most demanding casting application. Before you place a single order, run through this 12-item checklist. Every item you skip is a potential quality crisis, a rejected shipment, or a damaged supplier relationship.
Pre-Order Checklist (12 Action Items)
- ☐ Verify IATF 16949 certificate — Check at oversight.iatfglobaloversight.org. Does the scope cover your casting process and materials?
- ☐ Request APQP milestone plan — Advanced Product Quality Planning timeline: design validation → tooling → first article → PPAP → production
- ☐ Define PPAP submission level in writing — Level 3 is standard; specify which customer-specific requirements apply
- ☐ Establish Cpk requirements by dimension — Critical: ≥1.67; Significant: ≥1.33; General: ≥1.00. Don't accept "we'll try our best"
- ☐ Specify all special characteristics — Mark drawings with safety-critical and significant characteristics. Get foundry sign-off
- ☐ Define first article inspection requirements — CMM report on all dimensions, material test report, hardness test
- ☐ Agree on measurement system (MSA) — Gage R&R must be <10% of process variation
- ☐ Specify packaging and labeling requirements — Part number, lot number, heat number traceability on every box
- ☐ Define freight terms and Incoterms — DDP (delivered duty paid) or CIF (cost insurance freight)? Who arranges outbound inspection?
- ☐ Establish defect escalation process — What's the response time for 8D reports? Who approves corrective actions?
- ☐ Set up regular quality review cadence — Monthly quality metrics call; quarterly on-site audit; annual supplier review
- ☐ Agree on tooling ownership and IP protection — CAD files, patterns, dies owned by buyer. Non-negotiable.
Key Quality Requirements to Define
| Requirement | Standard | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Material | GB/T 1591 / ASTM / JIS | Specify exact standard and grade |
| Surface treatment | E-coat, powder coat, Zn plating | Define specification and min. thickness |
| PPAP format | AIAG PPAP 4th Edition | Specify submission level |
| CMM inspection | First article + per batch | Define sampling plan |
| Weld repair | Written approval required | Define when repair is/isn't acceptable |
| Corrective action | 8D report within 5 days | Escalation path defined |
Most Common Automotive Casting Quality Issues
- Porosity in pressure-critical areas — Mitigate with radiographic testing or pressure testing requirements
- Dimensions out of Cpk range — Require capability studies before production approval
- Incorrect heat treatment — Require heat treatment certificates per heat/lot
- Part mix-up (different parts in same box) — Require positive material identification (PMI) and lot segregation
- Traceability breakdown — Part marking and documentation requirements in writing
